A Meissen porcelain serving spoon with the Sulkowski arms

A large spoon decorated with "indianische blumen", straw bundles, and the Sulkowski coat-of-arms to the terminal. Unmarked. A restored breakage to the handle. L 30.2 cm.

The service to which this spoon belongs was produced by Meissen for Imperial Count Aleksander Józef von Sulkowski and his wife Maria Anna Franziska von Stain zu Jettingen in 1735. It was one of the largest orders not carried for a patron other than August II himself and in which Johann Joachim Kaendler was involved in the production of the models. Many pieces display signs of firing damage, perhaps because the service had to be produced in haste. It is not known for certain how extensive the order was, but researchers presume around 600 pieces, of which plates, platters, and dishes are the most numerous. This serving spoon is incredibly rare, perhaps even the only example of its kind.
