Joris van Son was christened in Antwerp cathedral in 1623. It is not known by whom he was initially taught to paint, but he may have come into contact with Jan Davidsz. de Heem in his formative years, as his early paintings display a certain stylistic closeness to this artist's works. Like de Heem, van Son also specialised in still lifes, but covered numerous sub-genres within this vein. He is known to have painted vanitas and luxury still lifes as well as the garlands of flowers and fruit surrounding figural cartouches painted by artists such as Erasmus Quellinus and Jan de Duyts. Van Son's colour palette is generally lighter and more transparent than that of de Heem, and he often places his widely spaced items close to the front edge of the painting to simulate nearness to the beholder.
Fred Meijer confirmed this work to be a characteristic authentic work by van Son in 2008.
