Maurice de Vlaminck

Paysage d'Hiver
Circa 1935

Gouache on firm drawing paper 49.2 x 57,2 cm Framed under glass. Signed 'Vlaminck' in black lower left. - The depiction contoured linearly in pencil (46 x 54.6/55 cm). - The right part of the gouache with three inconspicuous smaller losses of white paint, professionally secured; the sheet slightly browned. In fine, original condition with vibrant colours.

Along with his fellow painters André Derain and Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck was among the most important painters of French Fauvism from the very beginning. In terms of both its temperament and its autodidactic orientation in defiance of tradition and the academy, the newly developed style of painting genuinely suited his personality. In later years Vlaminck changed the colours he used, and his palette exhibits a modified differentiation of values, but there is no substantial alteration in elements like expression, impetus and his spontaneity in grasping the image. Atmospheric landscapes and snow-filled views also develop an essential and special significance in his oeuvre. The present gouache is a very appealing and characteristic example of Vlaminck's work from the 1930s.
