A Berlin KPM porcelain vase with two views of Berlin

"Französische vase" model with rosette handles, fired in two parts and screw-mounted. Decorated on both sides with finely painted views and inscribed to the neck "Das Königl: Palais in Berlin." and "Der Kreuzberg bei Berlin." Blue sceptre mark, red imperial orb mark, blue star. H 48.5 cm.
After 1832.

The crown prince's palace was built in 1732 by Philipp Gerlach for the later King Frederick II. In 1809 it was provided with a curved bridge connecting it to the crown princess' palace located adjacent to it. This bridge was the first royal commission to be awarded to the then little known architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The original idea for the monument to the German Campaign which can be seen depicted on the other side of the vase in the left foreground can also be traced back to Schinkel, and alongside Johann Heinrich Strack he was its leading architect. Friedrich Wilhelm III laid the foundation stone on 19th September 1818, and the monument was inaugurated on 30th March 1821 during a visit by the Russian Tsar Alexander I.
