Netsuke are very small. Smaller than a matchbox, often as small as the joint of my little-finger, these Japanese ivory, bone and wooden carvings are hard explosions of exactitude.

China. Southern Song dynasty (1127 – 1279), Diameter 14 cm

“There are some objects that are so beautiful we cannot help but admire them regardless of our cultural background. Our last auction included one such treasure: A small Ge plate of the southern Song Dynasty.

The plate is thought to have left the Imperial collection and entered the collection of Friedrich Otto Hasse via the European art market some time in the early 20th century. Just as the crackle glazed stoneware of the southern Song Dynasty was admired by connoisseurs during the Yuan and Ming eras and later by Emperor Qianling, the small dish, formed as a six-petalled hibiscus flower, was cherished and cared for by Friedrich Otto Hasse and his descendants.

My heart beat a little faster every time I took this plate in my hands, but each time I felt more alive and happy to be part of its amazing story. Experiences like these confirm my passion.”
