Broken Mirrors

Kurt Schwitters
DAS GUSTAV FINZLERBILD

Estimated price:
€ 400.000 – € 600.000

Kurt Schwitters’ MERZBAU, commenced around 1923, may be considered his most bizarre work: the artist’s life’s work! Schwitters playfully subordinates the mostly plain white wood and plaster moulds to the constructivist idea; it is probably his intention to counteract political reality here and certainly also to hide his biographical conception of life full of (romantic) memories.

Much of the world of MERZBAU is also echoed in the GUSTAV FINZLERBILD: surfaces of varying dimensions collide as if in relief, mutually supporting each other in the architectural structure, entirely in keeping with the historical MERZBAU. The GUSTAV FINZLERBILD: a detail of the Merzbau? The testing of forms, cubes, and walls in colour? Without doubt, the striking architectural reference of the picture reflects the artist’s multi-layered working methods and his inventive testing for the great subject of assemblage MERZBAU – and this is one of the reasons why it is so significant for his oeuvre.

“Hans Purrmann’s LANDSCHAFT MIT PALME drew me in immediately. The brightly lit composition with the palm tree seems to smile at the viewer and evokes the atmosphere of a Mediterranean summer. The landscape and architecture in vivid greens and warm ochres seem to meld into an ode to the South beneath a bright blue sky. When I see Hans Purrmann’s works, I always imagine the painter as a very happy man. This is especially true of LANDSCHAFT MIT PALME , which he painted during his honeymoon in Corsica.”

Georg Muche
TEN LEUCHTPERPENDIKEL

Estimated price:
€ 40.000 – € 60.000

Georg Muche‘s glittering, colour-drenched LEUCHTPERPENDIKEL series from the year 1916 is among the rare existing examples of experimental abstraction from this time. Hans Konrad Röthel writes “The early pictures: From the very beginning he created a colourful, a-perspectival illusionary space. It was the foundation of Muche’s work.” Colour, light, geometry, and elementary shapes form a rhythmic structure as if in a dance, full of artistic poetry.

Purchased directly from the artist, LEUCHTPERPENDIKEL has been in private ownership ever since. As an homage to the youngest and, alongside Lyonel Feininger, the first of the Bauhaus masters appointed by Walter Gropius, these ten watercolours were exhibited in the re-opened Meisterhaus Muche in Dessau. We are delighted to be able to offer you these works in the Bauhaus anniversary 2019!
