Bronze, height 22 cm,
early Qing period

“Sometimes it is the stories attached to the object that give rise to a special affection for it. The vase belonged to the former collector Franz Xaver Bachum from Cologne; he acquired it from Lempertz in 1917 from the collection of the Museum of East Asian Art in Cologne. My first encounter with the vase was in Finland in February this year, and I was immediately excited by the shape. My stay in Finland was so wonderful that the country and especially the owner of the vase conquered a place in my heart. Mr Bachum’s granddaughter insisted that Lempertz in Cologne should sell the bronze. And it was fate that the vase is now finally back in the collection of the Museum of East Asian Art – after more than 100 years, various detours and a journey almost all around the world.”

Sometimes the practical becomes the most beautiful of decorations. Traditional kimonos have no pockets and already posed no small challenge to their wearers in the 17th century. Where to put the pipe, tobacco and money? It must have been a practical aesthete who at some point came up with the solution: small boxes and bags hanging from a sash, attached to the waistband by small creatures – elaborately crafted mythical figures of ivory, precious woods, porcelain – or, as is the case here, the tusk of the narwhal. Small Gods, big help.
