The model for this type of cabinet with stone inlays from Italy was the famous Augsburg cabinet by Gustav Adolph, housed in the Museum Gustavianum, University of Uppsala today. It is based on a design by the Augsburg art dealer Philipp Hainhofer, who also commissioned the renowned Pomeranian Kunstschrank. Since the 16th century, pietre dure inlays were sought-after premium export articles, and this cabinet may have been made especially to display this valuable marble.

Presumably Rome, around 1820 – 1830, 14th cent. yellow gold, translucent plate in slightly striped rust-brown sardonyx

“The exciting thing about our job is tracking down interesting finds. In a Belgian collection, I came across this large-format, Greek-signed gem, which inspired me because of the lively depiction of the figures and the extraordinary sophistication in the execution of the cut stone. There was no information from the consignor, but immediately I had an idea. What if this were one of the famous classicist Poniatowski gems? Style, quality, Greek signature, it all matched. I plunged into research like a bloodhound until I found it in the Beazley archives of Oxford University. The database contained the final proof in the form of the identical impression of our gem.”
