Jacob Philipp Hackert
VIEW OF THE ARNO VALLEY AND FIESOLE

Estimated price:
€ 70.000 – € 90.000
Result:
€ 161.000

This VIEW OF THE ARNO VALLEY AND FIESOLE from 1804 is one of the most important works from the late creative period of Jacob Philipp Hackert. It was part of a private collection for over a hundred years, and for a long time, it was merely known from mentions in historic documents including an extensive description by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, no less. As if on a journey, the poet accompanies his readers through the painting and its landscape, starting at the river plain of the Arno, passing houses and churches up to the mountains and hills, to “the crowning heights of Florence”.

Pierre Patel
Landscape with the Rest on the Flight into Egypt

Estimated price:
€ 120.000 – € 150.000
Result:
€ 186.000

Two further versions of this composition by Pierre Patel or located in Sheffield and in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours today. Our painting is considered to be the first version, which can be identified not only in the dating, but also in the outstanding painterly quality of our work. The particularly fine brushwork evident in the architecture and the foliage, the soft mood of evening light and the academic-compositional structure of the scenery within this ideal landscape are the epitome of Pierre Patel’s visual language.

“Anyone who has ever heard Cardinal Meissner, the former Archbishop of Cologne, speak about art knows what a passionate art lover he was. He obviously enjoyed works of art and was able to convey them very vividly and enthusiastically. Thus, public interest, also of the media, was considerable when his estate was auctioned off at Lempertz. Among his paintings and sculptures, a small Italian triptych painted on a gold background from the 14th century stood out. Research before the auction showed that it could be attributed to the so-called master of Tobias, an artist from the workshop of Andrea Orcagna, the leading painter in Florence at the time. After a long bidding contest, the small altarpiece went to a foreign bidder for almost 500.000 Euros.”
