Michelangelo Maestri - biography

The works of the Italian artist Michelangelo Maestri – of whom only the year and place of death is known, namely Rome in 1812 – are mainly based on motifs from ancient frescoes discovered in Pompeii and Herculaneum and on designs by Raphael or his pupil Giulio Romano. Maestri’s meticulously executed gouaches enjoyed great popularity among European travellers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
