Mark Seliger was born in Amarillo, Texas on 23rd May, 1959. He spent his childhood in Houston where his enthusiasm for photography grew during his school days and he learnt the workings of the darkroom. After high school, he studied at East Texas University, majoring in photography with graphic design and found an assistant position as a photographer in New York where he was able to gain further practical experience. His passion for photographic art was fuelled by his interest in the works of Irving Penn, Richard Avedon and Arnold Newman and the young artist was also inspired by the early works of Victor Skrebneski and the pictures of Mary Ellen Mark and Diane Arbus. After working as an assistant for various photographers in New York for two and a half years, Seliger ventured into self-employment. His work soon came to the attention of Rolling Stone, which initially employed him as a freelancer and, from 1992, as its chief photographer.
Mark Seliger photographed over 125 covers during his time at Rolling Stone. In 2002, he moved to the publishing house Conde Nast and worked for ten years for the magazines Vanity Fair and GQ, and now works regularly for renowned magazines such as Harper's Bazaar, Elle and Vogue. In addition to the fashion world, it is above all the music industry that likes to utilise Seliger's services. His oeuvre includes several album covers, but above all impressive portraits of stars such as Kurt Cobain, Mick Jagger, Lenny Kravitz and Keith Richards. Seliger's work is not confined to a single format or camera - he adapts his tools to the circumstances and experiments with different approaches for each project until he finds the ideal one. However, he particularly enjoys photographing in black and white because he recognises a special emotional effect here and his own photographic roots also lie in black and white photography.
It is important for Mark Seliger to approach every photo assignment with the same passion and seriousness, regardless of whether it is a commercial or artistic assignment. Whoever hires him, he says, gets the whole picture - with the full breadth of his skills. Seliger has photographed former US President Barack Obama, the Dalai Lama and the last Holocaust survivors, has published several photo books, and his pictures can be seen in museums and galleries all over the world and are an integral part of the collections of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, the Museum for Fine Arts in Houston and the National Portrait Gallery in London. Mark Seliger has received awards and honours for his photographic work, including the Alfred Eisenstaedt Award, the Lucie Award, the Cannes Lions Grand Prix and the Texas Medal of Arts Award.
Mark Seliger lives and works in New York.
