Cornelis Pietersz Bega

A YOUNG MAN SLEEPING

Red chalk on ribbed paper. 18.5 x 23 cm.

Watermark: Hunting Horn (A. A. Churchill, Watermarks in paper, Amsterdam, 1935, p. 12, fig CCXCVIII, Wendelin Richel). Pale edge.
The Haarlem painter Cornelis Bega was a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, whose subjects he also took on; often featuring scenes from the daily lives of farmers and small traders, taking place in taverns and poor taverns. Unparalleled in Dutch genre painting is Bega's approach to the characters, whose dignity and humanity could hardly be attributed to another genre painter.
In reference to our drawing Schatborn Peter in the exhibition catalogue, Amsterdam and Washington (op.cit.), states: "The present drawing fits well enough into the agreed corpus of the artist's drawings."
