The present still life is a rare work by the monogrammist VS.Z., from whom only around a dozen works are known, all of which are still lifes. The artist was active in Haarlem and depicts elegantly arranged, small groups of objects, mainly influenced by the works of Willem Claesz Heda. The choice of motifs in this piece - a rummer with white wine, bread, a half-peeled lemon and peaches - as well as its composition shows similarity to two equally large still lifes by the artist, which were both auctioned by Sotheby's in New York on 25th January 2008 (both previously in Lempertz auction 555 on 24.11.1976).
