Hans Brüggemann

AN OAK RELIEF OF A KNEELING APOSTLE, HANS BRÜGGEMANN, PRESUMABLY 1523

Oak, Hans Brüggemann probably 1523 (GR 2.055)
Wear with minor losses. The front right hem of the cloak and the nose replaced. 70 x 35 x 13 cm.

An oak figure of a kneeling apostle, Hans Brüggemann, presumably 1523. Carved oak, the reverse flattened and hollowed out, minor remains of a former polychromy. The relief, which has been worked from one block, shows the apostle James the Elder turning to the right and kneeling in prayer. Unworked areas such as the right forearm, a depression to the reverse of the shoulders and holes for pegs to the sides all pertain to the relief originally being part of a larger group, possibly of the death of the Virgin. Jan Friedrich Richter (cited above) recently proposed that the relief could be a part of the altarpiece created by Brüggemann for the Church of St. John in Walsrode.
