The Holy Family and Saint John the Baptist

Oil on copper. 31.5 x 31.5 cm (octogonal).

The iconography of this octagonal copper panel is interesting. Whilst Maria gazes lovingly at the Christ Child in her lap, Saint Joseph is shown looking up at putti holding the instruments of the passion: Cross, crown of thorns and sponge all allude to Christ's impending sacrifice. The lower edge of this dramatic diagonal composition is closed by the figure of the young Saint John the Baptist holding a lamb.
