A boxwood netsuke of a shishi. 19th century

Landing on its forelegs, the hind legs up in the air, the bushy mane surrounding the head, the long tail swishing to the side, inside the mouth a large coral ball. The eyes of metal with remains of gilding and with inlaid eye pupils.
Height 3.7 cm

The subject may allude to the legend according to which a lion parent pushes the cub down a cliff to harden it against the vicissitudes of life.
