A large and amusing Tokyo school boxwood netsuke of Hotei and two karako, by Shinkeisai. Mid 19th century

A karako paints a friendly face on the Hotei’s fat belly, who sits with a stiff fan leaning back onto his filled bag and laughs at being tickled by the brush, and a second karako kneeling at his side. Himotôshi lined with ivory. Signed Shinkeisai.
