A Hida school boxwood netsuke of Raiden and Okame, by Suketada. Late 19th century

The coy god of thunder with drums wrapped in a furoshiki tied to his back, steps out from a shallow wash tub while Okame grabs his hand trying to hold him back. Raiden’s eye pupils of black glass, himotôshi lined with green-stained ivory. Signed Suketada in a rectangular reserve.
Height 3.9 cm

A popular subject with Hida-Takayama carver Eguro Suketada (1851-1915), who signed with Shôko at a later date.
