A Hida-school okimono-type boxwood netsuke of Jurôjin, by Shôko. Late 19th century

Seated on a reclining stag with a Chinese-type fan and clad in wide robes, one of the long sleeves draped over the stag’s horns. Himotôshi lined with green-stained bone. Signed Shôko.
Height 4.8 cm

A very similar and possibly identical carving is listed in the MCI. Meinertzhagen remarks that this figure is from a set of shichifukujin figures carved in the early Meiji period for export (MCI, p. 746).
