Karl Schmidt-Rottluff

Grosses Glas und Masken
1965

Watercolour and India ink on pale yellow, slightly textured laid watercolour paper 70.2 x 49.7 cm Framed under glass. Signed 'SRottluff' in India ink lower right and on reverse dated '65', titled '-Grosses Glas und Masken-' in pencil. Works number '6559' in pencil recto lower left. - In fine condition.

In this large late watercolour sheet, Schmidt-Rottluff combines a distinctive green glass vessel with his own sculptures: a work in stone can be recognised at the bottom left, a black basalt head from 1952 (“Schwarzer Basaltkopf mit Gesichtsschnitt”, Wietek 105), as well as a small bone relief at the right (in the manner of the “Röhrenknochen”, tubular bones with carved masks, from 1943-1953; cf. Wietek 181). Particularly in the 1960s, Schmidt-Rottluff enjoyed combining his modern glass with exotic, artistic artefacts in his still lifes - just as they also surrounded him in his home and decorated his bookshelves (see comp. illus.).
