A square ivory manjû of a karako with toys, by Jugyoku. Mid 19th century

Wearing fancy garments and a collar tied at the back, he holds a whistle; on the reverse in sunken relief various toys including Daikoku’s mallet, a Daruma doll, a rattle, a fishing rod with a fish (uki kingyo), a biidoro (a glass horn), and an Okame mask. The ivory stained in various shades of brown, only the face in the natural colour of the ivory. Signed Jugyoku.
