A Nuremberg silver gilt tankard. Of cylindrical form on a bulbous base, the rim moulded and the volute handle decorated with a female herm. The body engraved and embossed with biblical scenes in three oval reserves: 1. The creation of Eve, 2. The annunciation and 3. The baptism of Christ in the background of a contemporary baptism scene. Inscribed "Was hilf das Weben" / "Wenn Christi Leben" / "die Tauff nicht geben" beneath each of the reserves. Between these, acanthus vines interspersed with putti carrying out various tasks. The domed hinged lid with a thumb rest and a screw-mounted relief medallion showing Christ among the little children, engraved with a passage from Matthew 19:14: "Laßet die Kindlein Zu mir kommen, u wehret Ihnen nicht, dan Solchen Ist das Reich Gottes. Marc. am 10 Capite." The tankard is engraved with a small, possibly English, coat of arms with the Order of the Garter and a device beneath the rim. Marks of Johann Jacob Wolrab, ca. 1688 - 90.
