Henry Nicolas Jeaurat de Bertry

A Kitchen Still Life with Poultry, Vegetables and Bread

Oil on canvas. 75.5 x 59.5 cm.

In the past, many of Henry Nicolas Jeaurat de Bertry's still lifes have falsely been attributed to Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin; a mistake that pertains to the high quality of this artist's works. De Bertry was born in Paris in 1728, making him a generation younger than Chardin, and was taught by his uncle Étienne Jeaurat, who was a professor at the Royal Academy and director of the Royal Art Collection at Versailles. He was accepted to the Académie Royale for two still lifes in 1756 and specialised in this genre, although his oeuvre also contains city views and genre scenes. Five years later we find him at Versailles, where he became court painter and attained the title of Peintre de la Reine.
