A Kyoto school ivory netsuke of Hotei and two karako. Late 18th century

Wearing elaborately engraved robes and seated pot-bellied with thick earlobes, Hotei places his right hand on the shoulders of a karako crouching next to him, while another karako with a stiff fan climbs over Hotei’s shoulder. The eye pupils of black horn. Inscribed Tomotada in a rectangular reserve.
