An interesting Nagoya-school wood netsuke of a coiled dragon, by Mitsutame. Mid-19th century

The large head with two short horns rests on the thick scaly body, the long whiskers spread out onto the body. The eye pupils lacquered black. Signed Mitsutame in ukibori in a rectangular reserve.
Height 2.8 cm; width 3.4 cm

The rare artist Mitsutame is only known by a single netsuke of a sleeping shôjo, formerly in the collection of Martha Reiter, published in NKSJ, Vol. 8, No. 4 (Winter 1988), p. 12, fig. 3 and Lazarnick 1982, p. 788.
