Karl Einhart studied at the Archducal Academy in Karlsruhe from 1904 to 1909 and then spent 1910 at the Berlin Academy, where the present painting was most probably made. Following a sojourn to Paris, he settled in Berlin and made acquaintance with artists such as Lovis Corinth, Max Liebermann and Edvard Munch. He was conscripted in 1914 and afterwards moved to his hometown of Koblence. Karl Einhart's life and works have been honoured in numerous publications.
