A Castelli maiolica plaque depicting the triumph of Bacchus. With an illegible inscription to the reverse and red inventory nos. Firing faults, the rim slightly ground down, rim chips, minimal scratches. H 26.5, L 35.5 cm.
Probably Carmine Gentili (attributed), 1st half 18th C.

This motif is originally based on Annibale Carracci's (1560-1609) "Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne", kept in the Galleria Farnese in Rome. However, the direct prototype for this work would have been the copperplate engravings after the painting by Antoine Coypels (1640-1703). A plaque with a more extensive depiction is kept in the Museo e Certose di San Martino in Naples.
