Michael Kern, studio of

An ivory figure of the mourning Virgin from a crucifixion scene carved in the studio of Michael Kern.

Carved in the round. A full-figure depiction of the Virgin turned to the right and standing in contrapposto on a round plinth. She holds Her right hand clasped to Her breast in grief, and gestures to Her side with the left. The piece is exquisitely worked in all its details, and the face and composition correspond especially strongly to the works of Leonhard Kern, the most important small scale sculptor in early Baroque Germany. The parallels are so close that in her expertise, Vera Schneider ascribed the piece to the workshop of his elder brother Michael Kern.
The fingers of the left hand replaced. With hairline cracks and slight yellowing. Height 22.5 cm.

Certificate

Dr. Vera Schneider, Plochingen 29.5.2006.

Provenance
