A probably Central Rhenish carved wooden figure of a Holy Bishop, circa 1480/1490. Hl. Bischof

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse deeply hollowed out. With extensive remains of overpainted, older polychromy.. A figure of a Bishop Saint standing in contrapposto and holding a book in his left hand. He presumably originally held a crozier in his right. The sculpture is characterised by the interesting contrast between the animated folds of the Saint's cloak and the vertical pleats of his robe.
The formerly pegged right hand lost. Wear with losses to the mitre. Old insect damage to the underside. Height 90 cm.
