Chargesheimer (Karl Hargesheimer)

Untitled
1950s

Vintage chemigram on Agfa-Brovira paper. 54.8 x 37 cm. Estate stamp and numbered in pencil and ballpoint pen on the verso. Unique work.

In contrast to gelatin silver prints, which are created using chemically and heat-treated glass negatives (cf. lot 92), Chargesheimer's chemigrams are "painted" using liquid chemicals on baryta paper. For the present image, the artist has tilted the paper and allowed the photochemical liquid to spill in various directions. Although chemigrams are by definition unique works, their reproduction in negative processes is by no means limited. However, it is known that Chargesheimer considered the creative process to be over with the completion of the glass negative and the production of a single print, after which he would often destroy or overwork the negatives.
