A lacquered wood netsuke of Hotei and a karako in a furoshiki. 19th century

Both seated in a wrapping cloth (furoshiki) tied above their heads, reading the scroll between them, while the karako holds Hotei’s tama, the bag embellished with flowers and karakusa in makie on a thin black lacquer ground.
