A Nagoya school boxwood netsuke of Sennin Teireii, by Tomokazu. Mid-19th century

A Chinese sennin hatches from an egg, his large wings placed over the shell, in his hands a scroll of bone, the end knobs stained black. Signed Tomokazu in an oval reserve.
Height 4.3 cm; width 3.9 cm

This extremely rare subject illustrates Teireii Sennin who after mastering the magic arts was transformed into a crane. Usually he is shown sitting on a flying crane.

Provenance

Due to the rare subject probably identical with the netsuke in former collection G.W. (sold at Drouot, Paris, 9.5.1934, lot 142)
