A cast iron model of the Igel Column

H 47.2 cm.
Sayner Hütte, ca. 1830. Designed by Heinrich Zumpft.

Alongside the Drusus stone in Mainz, the Igel Column in the village of Igel on the Mosel is the only above-ground Roman grave monument north of the Alps to have survived in its original location since antiquity. It was not destroyed following the collapse of the Roman Empire due to the fact that the central image on the south face of the column was interpreted as a Christian depiction throughout the Middle Ages. The casting mould for this piece is among the most accomplished works of the model designer Heinrich Zumpft.
