Uzbek man eating pilaf

A realistically painted figure of a man crouching on a rug, eating the traditional rice dish. Blue overglaze enamel hammer, sickle and cog mark, impressed mark IK. H 15.8 cm.
Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory, the model attributed to Boris Vorobiev, formed by Ivan Kuznetsov, late 1930s / early 1940s.

The design for this impressive little figure is attributed to Boris Vorobiev (1911 - 1990). He was a pupil of Alexander Matveev and Vasily Vatagin. Vorobiev worked for the state porcelain factory from 1936 to 1942. His sculptural oeuvre was honoured with a retrospective exhibition in the St. Petersburg Marble Palace from November 2015 to January 2016.
