Fedor Shaliapin in the role of Boris Godunov

Blue overglaze stamped LFZ mark, green stamped 2c mark for second choice, an illegible modeller's signature(?) to the side. Chip to the edge of the coat. H 28.2 cm.
Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory, after 1936, the model by Iakov Abramovich Troupianskij, the decor after Varvara Fedorovna Rukavishnikova 1922.

Fedor Ivanovitsch Shaliapin (1873 - 1938) was a famous Russian opera singer with a highly expressive bass voice. He sang with the Bolshoi as of 1899, but also toured extensively in Russia and internationally, visiting houses such as the Scala and the Metropolitain Opera. In 1913 he was hired by Sergei Diaghilev to sing Russian folk songs in Paris and London. The design for the porcelain figure was probably based on a photograph of the singer taken by Sergei Prokudin Gorskii in 1915.
