Literature

Cf. Gennaioli, Le gemme dei Medici al Museo degli Argenti, Prato 2010, no. 838, for an oval blood jasper intaglio carved with the baptism of Christ kept in the Museo degli Argenti in Florence. The piece is of almost identical size and design to the present work and may have served as its model (inv. gemme del 1921, no. 1836). The Florentine intaglio is worked in the style of the early 17th century but is first mentioned in the inventory in 1786.
