France 13th century

A 13th century French wooden Corpus Christi

Carved in the round, the upper body slightly flattened to the reverse. Arms pegged. Remains of former polychromy. A depiction of Christ with his arms drawn wide apart, crucified with three nails, designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. He is shown wearing the crown of thorns and with His eyes half-closed, close to death. The simplified forms of the details, such as the parallel indentations used to depict the hair, ribs and perizonium, only serve to heighten the expressive quality of the piece.
Losses due to insect damage to the perizonium and arms; the vertical fold of the perizonium and three fingers of the left hand replaced. Height 146 cm, width of arms 137 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, France.
