A painted wood figure of a luohan. Ming dynasty

A painted wood figure of a luohan seated on a bench above a rocky base, his right hand clutching a string of prayer beads. Remains of polychrome and gold to the borders, the outer garment with flower medallions in gold-painted gesso. Ming dynasty.
Height 56.8 cm

This figure originally belonged to a group of sixteen or eighteen luohans. Eight of them were offered by Theodor Bohlken in Berlin in the 1930s. Out of these, three are illustrated in Weltkunst, 15.2.1931, p. 8. A group of three stylistically very similar wooden luohan is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, illustrated in: D. Patry Leidy and D. Strahan,Wisdom Embodied, New York 2010, p. 183, A 59.
