An Amsterdam silver gilt novelty goblet. Marks of Gerrit Valck, 1629.

The bottom of the cup containing a trompe l'oeill snail that becomes visible when the goblet is emptied. Re-gilt, one of the snail's eye stalks lost. H 14.3; diameter 18 cm, weight 297 g.

Novelty drinking vessels such as this enjoyed immense popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries. They often incorporate trick elements to hamper the drinker in emptying the vessel, or - as in the present work - startle him with hidden "surprises" when he does.
