The Discovery of the Infant Moses The Test of Fire of Moses The Israelites Collecting their Jewellery Moses Striking the Rock

Oil on canvas. Each ca. 118 x 148 cm.

These four paintings are part of a series illustrating the story of the Prophet Moses. The bible tells of how he delivered the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt and led them to the land of Canaan. “The Discovery of the Infant Moses” and “The Test of Fire of Moses” are both stories from the prophet's childhood. The third scene shows the Israelites collecting their jewellery to smelt it down and create the Golden Calf whilst Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the tablets of the law. The fourth image depicts a scene which took place during the 40 year exodus in the desert in which Moses struck a stone with his staff and it brought forth water.
These paintings, which have so far not been relined and remain largely in their original condition, were probably painted by a Lombard artist. They display stylistic parallels to the works of Federico Bianchi (1635-1719), a pupil of Giulio Cesare Procaccini.
