This small-format deer hunt by Jan van Kessel is a work which has been known to Klaus Ertz through a poor quality photograph for quite some time. The prototype for the piece was a large-format depiction of a deer hunt by Frans Snyders (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich, inv. no. 5218; cf. K. Ertz / C. Nitze-Ertz: Die Maler Jan van Kessel. Lingen 2012, p. 216-217, illus. 212). Jan van Kessel the Elder painted several works with hunting motifs (cf. Ertz/Nitze-Ertz 2012, illus. 209ff.). Due to similarities in the style and subject of this work to a depiction of "Cityscapes and Continents" in Munich and Madrid from 1660, Klaus Ertz also dates the present work to a similar time (cf. op.cit. as of illus. 1ff.)
