Johann Jakob Hoch

A Lady, Dog, and a Parrot seen through a Window Lady with a Sewing Box and a Parrot seen through a Window

Gouache on white grounded laid paper. Each 26.5 x 21.6 cm.

Johann Jacob Hoch was born in 1750 as the son of the Mainz court painter Johann Gustav Hoch. He was renowned for his technically brilliant gouaches, and the present works testify to this reputation. The Landesmuseum Mainz houses four pieces by Hoch, including his masterpiece “Schlittschuhfahrer nahe Mainz”. The present gouache is inspired by similar motifs found in the works of the Leiden Fijnschilder Gerrit Dou and Frans van Mieris, which were particularly admired at the archbishop's court.
