Netherlands ealry 16th century

An early 16th century Netherlandish carved oak Pietà group

The reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. A devotional image of the Virgin cradling the body of Her dead Son in Her lap, designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. The work's composition is dominated by the sophisticated play of drapery of the Virgin's cloak.
With fine vertical cracks and a narrow addition to Christ's chest. The piece is mounted in a probably 19th century wooden throne with a baldachin in the Gothic revival style. Height 25.5 cm (without throne) or 40 cm (with throne).
