Poultry Run with Two Peacocks

Carl Jutz was born in 1838 in the town of Windschläg in Baden. He lost his mother at the age of 10, and his father emigrated to America five years later. The young Jutz remained in Germany, and it was at this time that he began his artistic training under the Dutch animal painter August Knip in Baden-Baden. His artistic career and later development as an artist seemed predestined. He moved to Munich in 1861 and joined the circle of the animal painters Anton Braith and Friedrich Voltz, before moving to Düsseldorf in 1867. He remained loyal to animal painting, becoming one of the most famous and successful artists in this genre in 19th century Germany. He was most well-known for his poultry paintings: "His works are characterised by their attention to detail, closeness to nature, and technical perfection" (B. Palmbach, 2013).
