Andreas Jawlensky

Il Sorgere del Sole
1919

Oil on paper, laid down on card 37.5 x 52.5 cm (card 38.5 x 53.4 cm) Framed. Monogrammed 'A. J.' in black lower left and dated '1919' lower right. Imprinted exhibition label of the "XII.me EXPOSITION INTERNATIONAL DES BEAUX ARTS - VENISE 1920" verso, therein inscribed and crossed-out 'André Nesnakomoff-Jawlensky/ Il Sorgere del Sole/ 1200 Lire/ Ascona (Tessin) Suisse' by the artist in black ink and with a red Swiss customs stamp. - A miniscule paper loss in upper left corner. The slightly irregularly cut card a little bumped in upper left and lower left corner.

According to the kind information of Angelica Jawlensky Bianconi, Alexej von Jawlensky Archiv S.A., Locarno, Jawlensky had the painting on offer sent to the Venice Biennale in 1920. However, contrary to his three other works listed in the catalogue of the Biennale, it was presumably not exhibited. This can be concluded from the crossed-out exhibition label on the verso.
