An ivory okimono-type netsuke of Hotei, by Nanryû. Ca. 1960-70

The god stands upright with hands raised behind his back and with a strand of prayer beads (juzu) around his neck and wrists, the robe revealing his bare chest and pot-belly is painted brown. Signed Nanryû in a rectangular reserve.
Height 4.8 cm

Kurata Nanryû was born 1935 in Saitama Prefecture. His designs are taken from a wide range of Japanese folklore and legends.
