An Iranian ceramic model of an amulet casing

Cobalt blue glazed ceramic (possibly fritware). A decorative item with hanging loops. Designed as a modelled hollow cylinder with trellis pattern decor to the centre, tendrils to the edges and rosettes to both ends. H 7, W 4.5 cm.
Iranian world, presumably 13th C.

This piece is inspired by the form of a type of hollow metal amulet that was common throughout the entire Islamic period until the 20th century. The delicate, partially pierced, trellis-pattern decor also derives from metalwork. This piece is hollow and has lugs from which it can be suspended, but it cannot be opened. However, it may have been ascribed the same magical or protective powers as an actual amulet, even if it did not contain an inscription.
