A biscuit porcelain bust of a young woman

Some glazed areas with underglaze decor. Unsigned. Cracks. H 51.2 cm.
Attributed to Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, 3rd quarter 19th C.

Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824 - 1887) was artistic director and studio manager at Sévres from 1875 to 1887. He reorganised the manufactory's production, employing Auguste Rodin for new projects, and effectively embodying the new Belle Epoque taste. The present bust is thought to be a singular project, which would explain why it bears no manufactory mark. Producing such large works in porcelain always involved a certain degree of risk throughout the firing process, and the present work bears tension cracks attesting to this.

Provenance

Collection of Dr. Hermann Jedding.
