Antwerp School mid-16th century - Maria Lactans with Musical Angels
Antwerp School mid-16th century
Maria Lactans with Musical Angels
Oil on panel. 68 x 56 cm.
With the brandmark of the city of Antwerp and a red varnish collector's stamp inscribed "17/M 3 N/1879" to the reverse.
This composition with the Maria Lactans picks up a variety of South Netherlandish motifs: The central figure is a clear reference to Jan van Eyck's Luca Madonna (Museum Städel, Frankfurt am Main), the musical angels display the influence of the Master of Flémalle, whereas the foreground demonstrates knowledge of the works of Joos van Cleve.
Private collection, North Germany.
