Roepel, whose biography is currently largely unknown, was a pupil of the portraitist Constantijn Netscher, son of Caspar Netscher. As a passionate gardener, still lifes were to become his preferred motif. Paintings by this artist can be found in the Rijksmuseum, the Alte Pinakothek, and the National Museum in Prague. Fred Meijer confirms the present still life to be an authentic work by Coenraet Roepel in a 2016 Dorotheum auction catalogue.
